The most credible text in the local history of the reconstruction of the history of ancient India is the Rajatarangini of Kalhan.  Written in Sanskrit about the history of Kashmir.  Published in 1149-50AD.  This book is considered as the first history of Indian literature. He has also collected historical information from various books and inscriptions, testimonials, certificates, and land writings.  Kalhan's writings are characterized by neutrality and analytical vision.  Although there is an account of the history of Kashmir from ancient times to the twelfth century, the book could not be reliable due to lack of information. 

  Professor R.C. majumder, Rajatarangini by Kalhan is an excellent historical book.  It deals mainly with the history of Kashmir but also with the history of different parts of northern India.

Through this  book we can learn about the religion, literature, social life, culture and Maurya social life of that time.  With Kalhan Rajatarangini is the most significant.
